TENS is a simple to use, water resistant, electronic stimulation device, which utilizes a self-contained battery and microprocessor to generate a safe, precise, pre-calibrated electronic frequency to transmit a therapeutic electrical current through skin, and nerve for the purpose of reducing pain while maintaining user safety.
Utilizing a patented technology of direct electrical stimulation, the StimPad® operates with preprogrammed stimulus parameters to effectively target two of the body’s primary pain control mechanisms:
1. The stimulus parameters of the StimPad® selectively activate the larger superficial sensory nerves adjacent to the source of pain. These activated sensory nerves, are preferentially processed by the nervous system, effectively masking information from smaller pain nerves.
2. Stimulation of large sensory fibers causes the local release of endogenous chemicals including the Opioid Beta Endorphin, which have potent analgesic effects.

The success of electro-stimulatory therapy has been a result of its ability to relieve pain by utilizing the body’s own internal biologic controls. The mechanisms by which the body controls pain perception and pain relief were in fact identified by electronic stimulation.
Current theory describes three mechanisms by which we perceive and/or suppress pain sensation. The stimulatory devices targeting these mechanisms typically are categorized as nerve stimulators (TENS), muscle stimulators (EMS), or a combination of the two (Neuromuscular Electronic Stimulators). Medical science has defined these mechanisms by their specific response to stimulation.
1. Stimulation of large sensory nerves with TENS masks the smaller adjacent pain nerves.
2. Stimulation of muscle trigger points with EMS activate inhibitory nerve controls which suppress pain;
3. Stimulation of nerve or muscle (TENS & EMS) triggers the chemical release of Beta Endorphin, a natural opioid with potent analgesic (pain relieving) effects. The success of any therapeutic treatment will require targeting one or more of these overlapping mechanisms for the symptomatic relief of pain.
